Life on the Mekong

From the border of Thailand, it’s two days down the Mekong to Luang Prabang. All the tourists are herded on to long boats rather than the speedy motor boats, ostensibly for safety reasons. I suspect it has more to do with the fact that the vendors on the long boats make some serious [...]

I’m Hungry

_JAS6141.jpg, originally uploaded by MattKK.

A grouper taken at Kangaroo Island, South Australia. I would like to say the lighting was quite deliberate but unfortunately not. The fish was sitting at a cleaning station and allowed me to get very close - since I didn’t know how long he would stay in position, [...]

Floater

DKSURF30_9_0403.jpg, originally uploaded by MattKK.

Another favourite surf shot - Chris showing off his skills with a perfect floater. We spent quite a few hours on a dhoni moored just off a break south of Kuda Hura in North Male. However even with a 400mm and a teleconverter it was hard [...]

Body Surfing

DKSURF02_10_0217.jpg, originally uploaded by MattKK.

One of my favourite images from our ‘Go Surf’ shoot a few years ago in the Maldives. Chris, the surf pro in the shot was amazing to work with - all you had to do was tell him how close you wanted him and in what position and [...]

Market Trader, Inle Lake

MYAN2008-02-150050.jpg, originally uploaded by MattKK.

This woman was from one of the hill tribes living above the lake. I chartered a boat with Peter, a German photographer, to travel to the far south of the lake - much better than the touristy Indein and floating markets…

Silk Weaver, Inle Lake

MYAN2008-02-140335.jpg, originally uploaded by MattKK.

Many of the floating villages on the west side of Inle Lake specialise in weaving silk or lotus-fibre for both locals and tourists. The lotus-fibre material is unique to Inle and suitably expensive…

Australia and New Zealand

I am in the midst of some serious image editing from my recent trip to Kangaroo Island in Australia and the Poor Knights Islands in New Zealand, as well as Jason Isley’s and Roger Munns’ images from South Africa. ‘Reef’ is taking up huge amounts of my time and deadlines are looming.
I will try [...]

Stingrays, Sugarloaf, Poor Knights Islands

TUT19_2_070063.jpg, originally uploaded by MattKK.

The Sugarloaf is well-known for its big groups of stingrays - they like to gather in a trough on one side of this isolated stack of rock. Killer whales have been seen feeding the rays in this area.

Blue Mao Mao Arch, Poor Knights Islands

TUT17_2_070083.jpg, originally uploaded by MattKK.

Simon Enderby in the midst of the school of blue mao mao that live in the shelter of this arch. This pretty much sums up Poor Knights diving - stunning scenery, huge amounts of life and great water.

Inquisitive Sealion, Kangaroo Island - Pt. 2

Another shot of the same seal from below - very very photogenic!
