Off-camera flash…
One of my pet hates is a photograph ruined by the use of harsh, on-camera flash. As a result, I actually try to avoid using one, to the extent that I won’t get mine out of the bag even when I know a bit of fill will improve the photograph no end. Basically, I don’t trust my own abilities to get it right. Even with the option to dial down the flash output on a good strobe, I am still very wary of using one.
Time for a change. After spending far too much time recently on the Strobist site, I have decided to invest in some radio transmitters/receivers, a couple of older sb-26/28 strobes and a shoot-through umbrella. Ideally I am looking to build up some kit that I can actually take on my travels, no matter where I end up. A light-weight stand and a fold away brolly should easily fit in my tripod case and the radio kit is pretty small. Yes, it’s going to add to the weight but the results should be well worth it. And the cost shouldn’t be too bad. I can’t afford Pocket Wizards but Alien Bees have some reasonably priced transmitters and Radio Popper Juniors should be on the market soon. The extra strobes can be had pretty cheaply as well. All I need is a flash with a pc socket for the receiver trigger and I am up and running. I’m going to trawl eBay for SB-26s or -28s, both perfect for the job.
The Strobist site has a wealth of information on using small strobes - take a look and jump on the band wagon! For me, its a case of thinking a great deal more about lighting, natural or otherwise - well worth the time and expense…
