Life on the Mekong
From the border of Thailand, it’s two days down the Mekong to Luang Prabang. All the tourists are herded on to long boats rather than the speedy motor boats, ostensibly for safety reasons. I suspect it has more to do with the fact that the vendors on the long boats make some serious money selling beer and drugs to foreigners.
I met up with a group of Australians, Americans, a couple of Brits and an Argentinian, and ended up spending a couple of very funny days with them in Luang Prabang. I was a little disappointed with the town - too many tourists for my liking - but I would still love to go back to Laos and do some proper exploring.
All the recent black and white shots were taken with my Ricoh GRII. Its a wonderful camera to travel with - a razor-sharp fixed 24mm lens, reasonable noise in RAW mode and 11mpx. Its incredibly small and unobtrusive as well, perfect for ’street’ photography. If I ever get the money, I’ll buy a leica and a selection of lenses to use as I have been using the GRII and pull out my Nikon D3 when I need to! In my dreams…
